Fabric tightness is a group of indicators that reflect the relative tightness of fabric structural features, including fabric warp tightness (EJ), fabric weft tightness (EW), total fabric tightness (EZ), and the ratio of warp and weft tightness.

Fabric tightness is expressed by the coverage area of the warp or weft in the fabric, or the ratio (%) of the total coverage area of the warp and weft to the total area of the fabric. Under the same fabric structure, the greater the fabric tightness, the tighter the fabric. The warp, weft tightness and total tightness of the fabric are calculated to one decimal place, and the ratio of warp and weft tightness can be expressed as EJ / EW.

The calculation method of fabric tightness is as follows:

Fabric warp tightness EJ (%) = 0.037 × Warp density of fabric × √ warp count

Fabric weft tightness EW (%) = 0.037 × Weft density of fabric × √ weft count

Total fabric tightness EZ (%) = EJ + EW – (EJ × EW)

Of which:

0.037 - diameter coefficient of cotton yarn. According to the test results of the desktop projector, the diameter coefficient of fine (high count) cotton yarn is 0.037, that of medium (medium count) cotton yarn is 0.040, and that of polyester cotton 65/35 blended yarn is about 0.038, etc.

The warp density and weft density of the fabric are expressed by the number of warp and weft yarns within 10cm (pieces /10cm).

√ number of warp yarns and √ number of weft yarns - respectively represent the square of the number of warp yarns (Tex Tex) and the square of the number of weft yarns (Tex Tex);

Example: pure cotton poplin 13 × thirteen × four hundred and thirty-three × 299 (Imperial specification: 45 × forty-five × one hundred and ten × 76)

Fabric warp tightness EJ (%) = 0.037 × four hundred and thirty-three × √ 13 = 57.8%

Fabric weft tightness EW (%) = 0.037 × two hundred and ninety-nine × √ 13 = 39.9%

Total fabric tightness EZ (%) = 57.8% + 39.9% – (57.8% × 39.9%) = 97.7% – 23.1% =74.6%
